Sunday 9th January – walk **** – Hemley circuit – sunny and mild.
After missing out on a couple of windsurfing sessions being too cold or
wet, I was keen to get out at Levington for a foil today, Robert was also
keen too but sadly the wind did not play ball:( With the weather being so
good, wall to wall sunshine it was too nice a day not to do something,
being too muddy to bike Mag and I decided to head over to Hemley Church for
lunch, then do the circular walk. Arrived at the lovely church around one
and were lucky to get a parking spot as it was a popular this after due to
the sunny weather. We enjoyed our cuppa soup and sandwich; we know how to
live! We did wrap up well before setting off, Mag put on her wellies, we
worked out that they are over 35 years old, once belonging to my Mum:) We
heard a buzzard as soon as we got out of the van but did not spot it until
we had nearly finished the walk! A few mountain bikers passed in front of
us, we were not in the least jealous as the paths were very muddy! We
turned right taking the countryside path first with the highlight being a
very large flock of curlews feeding in a field which flow overhead, there
must have been over 40 birds! The path was much busier than usual and we
passed several people on our afternoon out but that was fine as we were
surrounded by some stunning scenery set against a deep blue sky:) There was
loads of geese in the field to the right as we reached Kirton Creek with
loads of mud and Red Shanks with teal and Widgeon. Taking the slippery path
back near the River Deben with the odd boat enjoying the perfect winter
weather, with the breeze very light it was mild, perfect walking
conditions:) We made a small detour to check out the Deben and were pleased
we did as there was a small number of Avocets up river, always great to see
them:) Then back to the van for the eight-mile trip home, with little wind
coming next week we hope to get out on the bikes, perhaps a trip Falkenham
Church to check out the snowdrops?
